Today Meta Film and SF Studios share the first stills from Mikkel Serup's political thriller Kingmaker (Danish title: Mørkeland), the long-awaited sequel to the popular and award-winning feature film Kongekabale from 2004. In Kingmaker, the audience will be reunited with Anders W. Berthelsen in the lead role of journalist Ulrik Torp and his editor Henrik Moll, played by Nicolas Bro. But there are also several new and young talents such as Mathilde Arcel, Sofia Nolsøe and Patrick A. Hansen in the cast. SF Studios distributes the film in the Nordics and the film will premiere in Danish cinemas in summer 2024 followed by an international release.

Kingmaker is a film adaptation of Niels Krause-Kjær's second novel Mørkeland about journalist Ulrik Torp and the sequel to the blockbuster Kongekabale which was filmed in 2004 and seen by over 550,000 people in Danish theaters.

"It was a bit special to come back to a character that I created 20 years ago, since the character Ulrik Torp has also lived for 20 years - just like I have. That's why we met each other at eye level again and it was fantastic to be allowed to come back to the Kongekabale / Mørkeland universe, which I love so much", says Anders W. Berthelsen.

Kingmaker is only a sequel for those who want to see it that way. As a story, it stands alone as a topical and thrilling political thriller about the state of democracy. Kingmaker is a new story about Ulrik Torp, set a whole generation after we left him as a young investigative reporter with his life and career ahead of him. 20 years have passed since then, Torp has become older, and his career has been replaced by unemployment and a mid-life crisis. From this place in life, he ends up in the middle of a new political conspiracy.

In addition to the already mentioned actors Anders W. Berthelsen, Nicolas Bro, Patrick A. Hansen, Sofia Nolsøe and Mathilde Arcel, the cast also includes Charlotte Munck, Lene Maria Christensen and Tommy Kenter.

Mikkel Serup (The Chestnut Man, Pound for Pound) is the director and Marie Østerbye (Deliver Us, Rita) has written the script. Kingmaker is produced by Meta Film with producers Sara Namer and Morten Kjems Hytten Juhl in co-production with Meta Film Stockholm and Film i Väst and in collaboration with SF, TV2, SVT and Yle with the support from the Danish Film Institute, The Swedish Filminstitute and the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. The film is distributed by SF Studios in the Nordics and REinvent handles international sales.

Kingmaker will premiere in Danish cinemas in summer 2024 followed by an international release.

About Kingmaker
After a round of layoffs and a long period on social welfare, Ulrik Torp ends up in an internship at his former workplace, Dagbladet, where his old colleague and now editor-in-chief, Henrik Moll, asks him to cover a murder of a young clerk at the Ministry of the Interior. Together with young interns, Emma and Simon, Torp follows a trail of a small circle of former politicians and top officials who are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that power stays in the right hands. Once again, we are drawn into a political conspiracy with Torp, this time with the very foundation of our society at stake.
