SF Studios new epic drama Margrete – Queen of the North premieres in Denmark

9 September 2021

Yesterday SF Studios hosted the premiere gala for its highly anticipated large-scale period drama, Margrete – Queen of the North. The film stars Trine Dyrholm (Queen of Hearts) in the lead as Margrete I. Margrete is considered the most powerful regent in Scandinavian history, as she gathered the three Nordic countries Denmark, Norway and Sweden into a peaceful and visionary union. Her Majesty the Queen attended the gala in Copenhagen together with political and business leaders and the Danish film industry. The film is produced by SF Studios with producers Birgitte Skov and Lars Bredo Rahbek and directed by internationally acclaimed director Charlotte Sieling (Lovecraft Country, Homeland, The Killing, The Bridge). The film will premiere in cinemas in Denmark on September 16 followed a theatrical release in the Nordics during fall 2021. SF Studios distributes the film in the Nordics and REinvent handles international sales.

Margrete – Queen of the North is the untold story of a visionary woman who stands at the absolute center of power. She is an amazing woman, ahead of her time, who sacrifices herself completely for her vision, for her countries. She creates something extraordinarily grand with enormous consequences to her personal life. But then a shocking rumor reaches the castle walls, and one wrong choice can ruin everything.

Producer Lars Bredo Rahbek says: “The Nordic countries usually work closely together, but with Margrete – Queen of the North we have accelerated our collaboration to create a film about the dramatic events and the woman who made a family out of the Nordic region. That is also why we have collaborated with the Nordic Association at the gala premiere - to create an understanding of our common Nordic heritage and the special connection between us, which is largely due to one woman: Margrete I”.

Producer Birgitte Skov continues: “Margrete – Queen of the North is also a film about leadership and parenting, topics that are very relevant in the modern time we live in today, 600 years later. Margrete I was a woman completely unique to her time, who with great political talent wanted to create a peaceful and fair world. But her great achievements were not without cost. She had to pay a high price for being an incomparable head of state”.

Lars Bredo Rahbek and Birgitte Skov conclude: “We are very much looking forward to presenting Margrete – Queen of the North to the global audience and it was an incredible honor that Her Majesty the Queen attended the gala premiere yesterday.”
