Today SF Studios releases the first still pictures from the highly anticipated large-scale film adaptation, The Emigrants. The pictures will also be presented in a photo exhibition in Duvemåla, Sweden, where the journey for the emigrants started in the 1850’s. The exhibition opens today and will continue over the summer. The film stars Lisa Carlehed and Gustaf Skarsgård and is produced by SF Studios with producer Fredrik Wikström Nicastro and directed by internationally acclaimed director Erik Poppe. The film will premiere in cinemas in Sweden on Christmas Day 2021 followed by a theatrical release in the Nordics during spring 2022. SF Studios distributes the film in the Nordics and REinvent handles international sales.

The Emigrants is the epic adventure of Kristina (Lisa Carlehed) and Karl-Oskar (Gustaf Skarsgård), who embark on a journey with no return, in search of a better life across the Atlantic. It is a sweeping story about love and adventure, which takes the audience through Kristina and Karl-Oskar’s life changing journey. It is also a story about Sweden, about Swedes and a reminder of the deep humanity that drives us all.

SF Studio's new film adaptation is based on a novel series by author Vilhelm Moberg. This summer selected film photography from The Emigrants will be presented at an exhibition, curated by StrandbergHaage together with the Municipality of Emmaboda, at the author's home in Duvemåla, Sweden, where the story was once born. The character Kristina is inspired by his grandmother, who grew up in Duvemåla.

Taking on a popular novel classic, where over one and a half million Swedes made the trip to the United States in the hope of a new better life, could not be more relevant.

The Emigrants is an immortal story that reflects our world, then as now. Interpreting Vilhelm Moberg's universe means reading the books with today's reality in the background and illustrate the present in Kristina and Karl Oskar’s fate”, says director Erik Poppe.

I want to interpret The Emigrants novel series in a new way. Their brave choice to flee this country more than 100 years ago for the opportunity to create a new life for themselves, for their children. Choices that are just as relevant today to many people around the world. Who we were then and who makes these choices today. It makes the story gripping, seductive and constantly relevant. The film should reflect that and this time through Kristina's eyes”, Erik Poppe continues.

Besides Lisa Carlehed (In Your Arms, Until We Fall, Psychosis) and Gustaf Skarsgård (438 days, Vikings) in the leading roles, the main cast also includes pop star Tove Lo, who is making her film debut in the role as Ulrika. Sofia Helin (The Snowman, Arn: The Knight Templar, The Bridge) portrays the role Judit and Lena Strömdahl (The Bridge) plays Kristina's mother.

The Emigrants is produced by SF Studios in co-production with TV4/Cmore, Film i Väst, Nordsvensk Filmunderhållning, Paradox, SF Studios Danmark and Fantefilm with the support from the Swedish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, The Norwegian Film Institute, The Danish Film Institute and DR. REInvent International Sales handles international sales.

The Emigrants is one of many high-profile projects lined up by SF Studios, including the Danish epic drama Margrete Queen of the North, the Norwegian feature film Quisling, the Swedish feature film A Swedish Christmas Tale and Swedish original series Snabba Cash for Netflix.

The Emigrants will premiere in cinemas in Sweden on Christmas Day 2021 followed by a theatrical release in the Nordics during spring 2022. The photo exhibition at Rundqvistagården in Duvemåla, Sweden, takes place from June 7 until the end of August.
