Today SF Studios releases the trailer for its upcoming and highly anticipated large-scale film adaptation, The Emigrants. The epic drama has been selected as Sweden's possible entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars 2022. The Emigrants is based on Vilhelm Moberg’s beloved story of the Swedes who left wretchedness and misery behind for a new life on the other side of the Atlantic in the mid-19th century. The film is directed by internationally acclaimed Erik Poppe starring Lisa Carlehed (In Your Arms, Until We Fall, Psychosis) and Gustaf Skarsgård (438 days, Vikings) in the leading roles playing Kristina and Karl Oskar. The main cast also includes Swedish pop sensation Tove Lo, Sofia Helin and Lena Strömdahl. The film will premiere in cinemas on Christmas Day 2021.

The trailer and poster give a taste of The Emigrants and the life-changing journey that Kristina and Karl Oskar embark on in the hope of a new, better life. It is a magnificent and timeless adventure about finding a place in the world, a new home, and the bravery to follow a dream.

”The story that Vilhelm Moberg told over 70 years ago is a timeless classic and more relevant today than when it was first written,” says Fredrik Wikström Nicastro, producer at SF Studios. “In The Emigrants we follow Kristina and Karl-Oskar’s courageous choices to leave everything behind for the chance to start over and build a new, better life for themselves and their family. It’s a sensational adventure they take us on, which is about finding their place in the world, finding a new home. This is a dream project that we have developed for many years together with a fantastic crew and cast, and we are excited to finally be able to share the trailer for the film with the audience”, Fredrik Wikström Nicastro continues.

Taking on a popular novel classic where over one and a half million Swedes moved to the United States in the hope of a new better life could not be more relevant.

I want to interpret The Emigrants novel series in a new way, this time through the eyes of Kristina. Kristina and Karl Oskar’s brave choice to emigrate from this country more than 100 years ago for the opportunity to create a new life for themselves and their children, is as relevant today for people around the world as it was then. The courage that followed them as refugees on the great dramatic journey from Småland across the Atlantic to Minnesota. It is a gripping, seductive and constantly relevant story about who we are, where we come from and what we dream of in life”, says Erik Poppe, director.

The Emigrants has recently been selected as Sweden's possible entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars 2022. The official candidate will be announced on October 21.

The Emigrants is produced by SF Studios with producer Fredrik Wikström Nicastro in co-production with TV4/Cmore, Film i Väst, Nordsvensk Filmunderhållning, Paradox, SF Studios Danmark and Fantefilm with the support from the Swedish Film Institute, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, The Norwegian Film Institute, The Danish Film Institute and DR.

The film is distributed by SF Studios in the Nordics and will be released in Swedish cinemas on Christmas Day 2021 followed by a theatrical release in the Nordics during spring 2022. REinvent handles international sales.
