Today Viaplay announced that Julia Ragnarsson and Erik Enge will play the leading roles in its upcoming Swedish original drama End of Summer, a psychological thriller based on the Swedish crime writer Anders de la Motte's bestselling novel of the same title. End of Summer is produced by Harmonica Films with SF Studios and Film i Skåne as co-producers. The six-episode series premieres in fall 2023 on Viaplay.

Viaplay's new psychological thriller End of Summer was filmed in Skåne in the southern part of Sweden last summer. The series is based on acclaimed and awarded crime writer Anders de la Motte’s first book of the same name in his novel suite Årstidskvartetten. The main role of Vera is played by Julia Ragnarsson (Two Sisters, Spring Tide) and in the supporting role of Isak we see Erik Enge (Tiger, Black Crab).

“This has really been a challenging and fantastic experience. Vera is a complex character and I've had the luxury of working with incredible actors. I am so excited for the premiere later this year and look forward to hearing what people think!”, says Julia Ragnarsson.

“It has been extremely rewarding to play in this series together with Viaplay and Harmonica Films. Partly because of the valuable interaction with such a talented ensemble and partly because of the unique experience and new experiences as an actor. I look forward to seeing the end result in the future”, says Erik Enge.

The stellar cast also includes Simon J Berger, Torkel Petersson, Per Ragnar, Linus James Nilsson, Anna Granath, Emelie Garbers, Henrik Norlén, Bahador Foladi, Vilhelm Blomgren, Ida Gyllensten and Lars Schilken.

The six-episode series starts with the disappearance of a five-year-old boy on a late summer evening in 1984 in rural southern Sweden. The police investigation fails to find the truth, leaving behind rumours, suspicion and a grieving family. Twenty years later, the boy’s older sister Vera is leading a group therapy session in Stockholm, when a young man describes a strangely familiar childhood memory of a disappearance. A shaken Vera travels home to her fractured family to uncover, once and for all, what really happened in the summer that never ended.

End of Summer is directed by Jens Jonsson (Blinded, The Hunters) and Henrik Georgsson (The Bridge, Wallander) based on a script by head writers Björn Carlström (The Hunters) and Stefan Thunberg (Hamilton, Farang). Episode writers are Axel Stjärne, Jimmy Nivrén Olsson and Pontus Edvinsson.

The series is produced by Harmonica Films’ Per Janérus (The Hunters, The War Game) and Björn Carlström with Jens Jonsson, Anders de la Motte, Tim King at SF Studios and Helena Larand at Viaplay Group as executive producers. SF Studios and Film i Skåne are co-producers. Worldwide sales are handled by Viaplay Content Distribution.

“We are very happy for our collaboration with Harmonica Films and for the opportunity to produce this exciting thriller series together for Viaplay. With a strong story translated into 30 different languages by one of our most popular crime writers and with all the talent in the project, we are confident that this will be a success both in the Nordics and internationally”, says Tim King, EVP Production at SF Studios.

“Viaplay continues to invest in strong Nordic stories that touch the audience. End of Summer is an incredibly strong novel because of its complex characters and beautiful settings. The series is created by an incredible team and I dare to promise Viaplay's viewers something out of the ordinary”, says Filippa Wallestam, EVP and Chief Content Officer at Viaplay Group.

End of Summer will premiere exclusively on Viaplay in fall 2023.
