SF Studios has acquired the film rights to the Easy Money screenwriter Maria Karlsson's epic film script about The Stockholm Bloodbath and Kristina Gyllenstierna. SF Studios will produce the film that is expected to start shooting in 2023.

The story centers around Kristina Gyllenstierna, a Swedish celebrity of her time who defended Stockholm when the Danes invaded the city in 1520. Gyllenstierna was in the epicenter when the Kalmar Union fell and most the Swedish nobility was executed by the Danish king Christian II during the Stockholm Bloodbath - part of the three-day coronation ceremony which became one of Sweden's most violent power struggles.

"It's time to give the audience a big movie - action, betrayal, love, power struggle! All with a pregnant mother with small children in the center. The Stockholm Bloodbath is exactly what we are looking for and Maria's excellent screenwriting will not disappoint anyone. We look forward to taking the audience by storm!”, says Yaba Holst, Head of Nordic Acquisition at SF Studios.

The script is created by Maria Karlsson who has previously written the script for the Easy Money film trilogy and the TV series The Lawyer and Blinded. The script has been part of the Swedish Film Institute's scheme to support female screenwriters’ work on big budget films.

“It surprises me that no one has made a film before about this spectacular, unique and completely horrifying event - one of perhaps the most important events in Nordic history. It is "the real red wedding" - with Kristina Gyllenstierna, a 28-year-old pregnant mother of five, in the lead role. I am so much looking forward to taking this script to the big screen with SF Studios ", says Maria Karlsson.

“This is a gigantic project that will take years of hard work. We are incredibly excited and it is an inspiring process we have started,” says Annika Sucksdorff, Head of Film Production Sweden at SF Studios.

The acquisition of the rights to The Stockholm Bloodbath is part of SF Studios’ strategy to produce and distribute commercial and qualitative blockbusters to the Nordic and international audience. SF Studios has already ongoing productions of the epic dramas The Emigrants and Margrete – Queen of the North, which premieres at the cinemas in fall/winter 2021 and will be presented as Works In Progress during the Nordic Film Market / GIFF on February 5.
