Kristofer Hivju and Frida Hallgren to star in Martina Haag and SF Studios’ new film True Love

24 August 2026

Frida Hallgren och Martina Haag.

Following the major success of her directorial debut, Martina Haag is back – with a romantic comedy about love, betrayal, money, and finding the courage to trust someone again.

Last year, Martina Haag made her directorial debut with Little Did I Know. The film quickly became one of Sweden’s biggest box-office successes of 2025, receiving widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics, and won the prestigious award for Best Film of the Year at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in June 2024.

Now Haag takes the next step as a Director with True Love (working title), a warm, offbeat and heartfelt romantic comedy about two people with, to say the least, complicated relationships with trust.

Martina Haag has carved out a path to the director’s chair that is entirely her own. With a background as an actress and screenwriter, as well as one of Scandinavia’s bestselling novelists, she has spent the past two decades establishing a strong and distinctive storytelling voice.

True Love is produced by SF Studios in co-production with Swedish Television, Film i Dalarna, Film Stockholm and Kinorama, with support from the Swedish Film Institute and the Croatian Incentive Programme, and in collaboration with NRK. The film is produced by Helen Ahlsson, with Emma Hägglund serving as Executive Producer. True Love is based on an original idea by Peter Arrhenius and Martina Haag, who has co-written the screenplay.

In True Love, we meet Ellinor, 55, whose husband leaves her after twenty years of marriage. Just as she loses faith in life – and love – she suddenly wins 440 million SEK and turns even more guarded. Then she meets Henrik, 50, a charming and irresistible liar who learned early on to bend the truth. She trusts no one. He lies about everything. Their relationship should be doomed from the start. But what if they are exactly what the other needs?

True Love is about letting your guard down and risking getting hurt again, even when you’ve been so badly burned you can barely pick yourself up. It’s about daring to love, and be loved, for your true self. And about love’s strange ability to overcome just about anything. Even when you have SEK 440 million in the bank,” says Martina Haag.

The lead roles are played by Frida Hallgren, known for films including the Oscar-nominated As It Is in Heaven and Hamilton, as well as the Norwegian international star Kristofer Hivju, known for Game of Thrones, Red One and Sweden’s most successful and long-running crime series Beck. For Hivju, the role offers an opportunity to show an entirely new side of his acting.

“BAAM! So proud that we’ve landed our dream cast! The chemistry between the fantastic Frida and Kristofer is absolutely electric. And it’s especially exciting that Hivju has never played a romantic lead before,” says SF Studios producer Helen Ahlsson.

The film marks Haag’s second collaboration with screenwriter Peter Arrhenius. Together, they aim to combine bold humor with believable characters, powerful emotions and a story about finding love later in life.

True Love will be presented at the Nordic Co-Production Market in Haugesund on 26 August.

Principal photography will begin in Croatia in early October, followed by filming in Stockholm, before concluding in Dalarna in November. True Love is scheduled for theatrical release in autumn 2027.
