Eagles of the Republic by Tarik Saleh Wins Six Guldbagge Awards

Tarik Saleh’s political thriller Eagles of the Republic enjoyed a major triumph at the Guldbagge Awards, Sweden’s national film awards, held this evening at Cirkus in Stockholm. The film won six Guldbagge Awards, including Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Male Actor in a Leading Role for Fares Fares.
Guldbagge Award wins for Eagles of the Republic:
· Best Film – Producers Linda Mutawi, Linus Stöhr Torell, Johan Lindström, Alexandre Mallet-Guy
· Best Screenplay – Tarik Saleh
· Best Male Actor in a Leading Role – Fares Fares (as George Fahmy)

· Best Visual Effects – Peter Hjort, Anders Nyman, Per Nyman, Mikael Windelin
Eagles of the Republic had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, was selected for the Centrepiece section at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, opened the Stockholm International Film Festival in November 2025, and has been chosen as Sweden’s submission for the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film.
Starring Fares Fares, Lyna Khoudri and Zineb Triki, the film is the final chapter in Saleh’s acclaimed Cairo Trilogy, following The Nile Hilton Incident and Boy from Heaven (Cairo Conspiracy). Eagles of the Republic was released theatrically in Sweden on November 14, 2025.
SF Studios distributes the film in the Nordic territories, with Memento handling France and Playtime overseeing international sales.
The film is produced by Unlimited Stories, Apparaten, and Memento Production, in co-production with Ström Pictures, Bufo, Films Boutique, SVT, Film i Väst, ARTE France Cinéma, SF Studios, Mikael Ahlström Films and Playtime. With the support of the Swedish Film Institute, Playtime, Canal +, Ciné +, Eurimages, Nordisk Film & TV Fund, Memento, Bayerisher Rundfunk, ARTE France, Danish Film Institute, Centre National du Cinéma et de l'image animée, Paris Region Fund, Finnish Film Foundation, YLE and DR.
The Guldbagge Awards ceremony is organized by the Swedish Film Institute in collaboration with SVT and took place at Cirkus in Stockholm on Monday, January 19, 2026.

Tarik Saleh’s Eagles of the Republic selected as Sweden’s International Oscar Submission
Today the Swedish Film Institute’s Oscar Committee revealed that Eagles of the Republic by Tarik Saleh is Sweden’s Submission for an Oscar for Best International Feature Film. The 98th Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on March 15, 2026.
