The feature film adaptation of The Closed Book is now in production. Director Charlotte Sieling has begun principal photography, based on the bestselling novel by Jette A. Kaarsbøl, with Alba August (Becoming Astrid, Bullshit) and Gustav Lindh (The Northman, A Prayer For the Dying) starring as Frederikke and Frederik. The Closed Book is produced by SF Studios, with Lars Bredo Rahbek and Mette Marie Munch-Petersen as producers, with planned premiere in cinemas in summer 2027.
The Closed Book is a powerful story about love, freedom, longing, and the choices that shape a human life. The film follows the young Frederikke, who is on the brink of a comfortable marriage to a priest when she meets the charismatic doctor Frederik. Since its publication in 2003, Jette A. Kaarsbøl’s historical novel The Closed Book has achieved classic status. According to the publisher Gyldendal, it is among their most successful novels of recent decades.
Director Charlotte Sieling has long envisioned bringing the novel to the screen. With The Closed Book, she aims to create a cinematic experience centered on love, identity and human vulnerability.
Charlotte Sieling comments, “What makes The Closed Book so compelling is how clearly the ideas and conflicts of its time still resonate today. Frederikke is a young woman searching for freedom and love on her own terms, a struggle that feels deeply familiar. It is a powerful, emotional story about longing, identity, and the choices that shape a life.”
The cast includes Clint Ruben (Bullshit, The Uniform) as Thomas Velin, Agnes Rase (Midsommar, Margrete: Queen of the North) as Amalie, Mathilde Lundberg (Bullshit, Sonny Boy) as Helene, along with Iben Hjejle, Ari Alexander, and Ellen Hillingsø. The legendary Ghita Nørby plays the older Frederikke. In addition, Joachim Fjelstrup and Mathilde Eusebius portray Georg and Gerda Brandes, while Andreas Dissing Hyttel appears as Herman Bang.
The Closed Book is produced by SF Studios in Demark, with producers Lars Bredo Rahbek and Mette Marie Munch-Petersen, with support from the Danish Film Institute, Film i Väst, DR, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, MOIN Filmförderung and the Swedish Film Institute. International sales is handled by Reinvent Yellow Sales. The film is a co-production with SF Studios in Sweden represented by Jonathan Ridings, Film i Väst represented by Kristina Börjeson, TamTam Film represented by Dirk Decker and Andrea Schütte, and Truenorth represented by Kristinn Thordarson.
The film is being shot in studio and on location in and around Copenhagen and is expected to premiere in cinemas in Denmark in late summer 2027.
