SF Studios’ feature film No Rest for the Wicked has been selected for the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, where it will have its world premiere this summer. The film will compete for the coveted Cheval Noir top prize in the festival’s main selection.
Set in the Faroe Islands in 1862, No Rest for the Wicked centers on a forbidden love between a young fisherman and a foreign whaler, unfolding under the pressures of faith, family, and community. The film reworks vampire mythology through a queer lens, blending gothic romance with elements of folk horror. Directed by Kasper Kalle and written by Rasmus Birch, the film is produced by Lars Bredo Rahbek at SF Studios.
The cast includes Egor Venned as the young Faroese fisherman Baldur, alongside Pilou Asbæk as the foreign whaler, Sofia Nolsøe as the mother along with a strong supporting cast lead by Faroese Kjartan Hansen, Icelandic-Faroese actor Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, and Danish-Faroese musician and composer Brimheim. In announcing the selection, Fantasia highlighted screen newcomer Egor Venned’s ‘remarkable lead performance’ as well as the film’s ambition and visual identity, describing it as a bold and singular contribution to contemporary genre cinema recalling Carl Th. Dreyer or even Robert Eggers. Fantasia is North America’s leading showcase for genre cinema, spanning horror, fantasy, and science fiction.
The film is produced by SF Studios with support from the Danish Film Institute, the Faroese Film Institute, the Faroese Ministry of Culture, the Nordic Film & TV Fund, Eurimages, Betri-Stuðul, and Creative Europe MEDIA. The film is a co-production with Faroese Outlier Projects (Jón Hammer) and Icelandic Truenorth (Leifur B. Dagfinnsson and Kristinn Thordason).
No Rest for the Wicked is expected to release theatrically in Denmark during November 2026.
