SF Studios announces Danish supernatural thriller Cychosis

31 March 2023

Zoe Bryan Hertz & August Issac Carter

SF Studios has just started shooting the Danish supernatural thriller Cychosis (Danish title: Cykose), which is based on Birgitte Lorentzen's book of the same name. Cychosis is directed by Kari Vidø, written by Birgitte Lorentzen and Henrik Kristensen and stars Danish rising stars Zoe Bryan Hertz and August Issac Carter. The cast also includes Maria Rossing, Rasmus Hammerich, Stran Ezgi Benli (Pretty Young Thing) and Oliver Due (Pretty Young Thing). SF Studios produces the film with producers Julie Rix Bomholt and Mia Elvstrøm Myrälf and distributes the film in the Nordics. Reinvent handles international sales. Cychosis is expected to premiere in Danish cinemas in March 2024 followed by an international release.

Cychosis is based on the first book in Birgitte Lorentzen's popular Cychosis trilogy. The Cychosis trilogy has received great international recognition and is the first Danish novel to be nominated for the prestigious French book prize "Le Prix des Incorruptibles".

Cychosis is a dark and intense story about Lulu and Mads, who have both experienced something strongly supernatural. The meeting between them leads to a wild and risky search for answers with consequences for both of them. It is raw realism that merges with a supernatural universe.

Producer Julie Rix Bomholt says: "It is incredibly exciting and unique to have the opportunity to work with a purely genre film, which at the same time touches on an important and current theme. Zoe and August ARE Lulu and Mads, and we are thrilled to have found two such talented young actors. They have a very special presence and a mutual intensity that almost sparks. We are so looking forward to seeing their talent unfold on camera and on the big screen.”

21-year-old Zoe Bryan Hertz, who plays the lead role as Lulu, made a name for herself in Jonas Risvig's DR series Salsa and crime series Boys. It is Zoe's first major leading role, her first feature film and the first time she will star opposite August Issac Carter. August, 25 years old, who plays Mads, graduated from the Danish School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen and shortly after got the lead role in the DR3 series Hooligan. He had previously appeared in a minor role in Martin Zandvliet's Land of Mine and the Netflix series Equinox. August is also performing in the award-winning play The Inheritance at the Danish Royal Theatre.

About Cychosis
After a party with a little too many drinks, Lulu ends up in the hospital, where in a near-death experience she sees a girl with a shaved head crying for help. When Lulu awakes, the girl is gone. But from here everything changes in Lulu's life! Nothing is like before! It's like someone or something is stalking her. At the same time, she meets the infamous, but fascinating Mads, who turns out to be able to see things that no one else can. Had Lulu known what would happen and what this would lead to, she would have stayed far away from Mads…

Cychosis will be filmed in Copenhagen and in Frederiksberg. Principle shooting has just started this week and it will go on until the beginning of May. The film is expected to premiere in Danish cinemas in March 2024 followed by an international release.

Cychosis is produced by SF Studios by Julie Rix Bomholt and Mia Elvstrøm Myrälf in co-production with Finnish co-producer Aleksi Hyvärinen from Don Films with support from the Danish Film Institute through film consultant Lotte Svendsen, Finnish Film Foundation, Nordisk Film & TV Fond, TV2 Denmark. The film is distributed by SF Studios in the Nordics and REinvent handles international sales.
