Today SF Studios announces “The Ingmar Bergman Script Award“ in collaboration with The Bergman Center, that will be awarded annually to a selected scriptwriter during The Bergman Week at Fårö in Sweden. By introducing this award, SF Studios and The Bergman Center wish to encourage young filmmakers and scriptwriters in the creation of feature film scripts that seek to combine an artistic ambition with the aim to reach a broad audience.
Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) is one of the world’s most influential and respected directors and scriptwriters of all time. SF Studios has produced many of his greatest films, that continue to be in demand from audiences to this day.
SF Studios and The Bergman Center have collaborated for many years to preserve the legacy of Ingmar Bergman. As part of this collaboration, SF Studios and The Bergman Center wish to encourage young filmmakers and scriptwriters in the creation of feature film scripts that seek to combine an artistic ambition with the aim to reach a broad audience by introducing The Ingmar Bergman Script Award.
“All films start with a script - and for a film to be great, a strong script is required. Bergman had his own method of bringing ideas to life on paper before they came to life on screen, and much of his success can be attributed to his strong script. Therefore, we are extremely happy that together with SF Studios we can launch the Ingmar Bergman Script Award, which we hope can serve as an encouragement and inspiration for filmmakers at the beginning of their career”, says Jannike Åhlund, chairman of the Foundation Bergman Center at Fårö.
“We are thrilled to be part of the Ingmar Bergman Script Award. It’s never been more complicated for filmmakers to reach an audience with feature films in Scandinavia. We see an increasing dichotomy between stories that are considered high quality and those that aim to reach a broad audience, and our ambition with this award is to support script writers in daring to achieve both”, says Tim King, Executive Vice President Production at SF Studios.
The Ingmar Bergman Script Award is launched today and will be awarded annually at The Bergman Week at The Bergman Center at Fårö, Gotland, in Sweden. The script should be an original story in a feature film format in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish with a clear ambition to reach a broad audience. The selected scriptwriter will receive a financial contribution for his/her work and get the opportunity to be coached by a renowned filmmaker/director/scriptwriter.
