SF Studios’ distribution title The Zone of Interest has been selected as the UK’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Oscars. The Holocaust drama, directed by Jonathan Glazer, has received critical acclaim and won the prestigious Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Christian Frieder and Sandra Hüller in the leading roles and is produced by Extreme Emotions, Film4, House Productions and A24. SF Studios will distribute the film in the Nordics with a theatrical release in 2024.

The film was selected by BAFTA, the organization appointed by the American Academy to choose the UK’s submission. To be eligible, a British film must be predominantly non-English language and released theatrically between 1 December 2022 and 31 October 2023. The Zone Of Interest was shot on location in Poland with largely German and Polish dialogue.

The Zone of Interest tells the story of Rudolf Höss (Christian Frieder), a Nazi commandant who designed and built Auschwitz and his relationship with his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), as they create their dream life directly next door to the concentration camp.

The Zone of Interest is loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis and a script by Jonathan Glazer, who also is directing the film. Glazer has previously directed acclaimed films such as Sexy Beast (2000), Birth (2004) and Under the Skin (2013).
