Today SF Studios released the trailer for its upcoming epic feature film The Abyss (Swedish title: Avgrunden), the first Swedish large-scale disaster film about devastating events taking place in the mining town of Kiruna and the iron mine Kiirunavaara. In the lead role we see Tuva Novotny (Annihilation, Eat Pray Love, Riget 2) and the director is the action veteran Richard Holm (Johan Falk, Mother Goose). The cast also includes Kardo Razzazi (Honour, Alex) and Peter Franzén (Vikings, The Gunman, Heart of a Lion) as well as Felicia Truedsson (Young Royals), Tintin Poggats Sarri (Charter) and Edvin Ryding (Young Royals). SF Studios is producing and distributing The Abyss, which will premiere in Swedish cinemas on September 15, 2023.

There is no doubt that something is about to happen in Kiruna, the only question is when. The Abyss is the story of a family faced with the unthinkable when the disaster everyone feared suddenly becomes a reality. At the center of the events is Frigga (Tuva Novotny), who tries to balance her risky job as a security manager in the Kiirunavaara mine with her family life, her new love Dabir (Kardo Razzazi) and her ex, who doesn't want to let go (Peter Franzén). But when the ground suddenly starts to shake under their feet, the puzzle of life doesn't matter and the struggle to not be pulled into the abyss begins.

"To direct a Swedish large-scale disaster film that is actually based on a possible scenario has been fantastic. Kiruna and the mine obviously play a big part in the film, but it's the actors above all that are important to create engagement in this kind of action-packed story, and we really have a great ensemble. Having Tuva in the lead role as a tough action heroine has also been a dream”, says Richard Holm, director.

"It is very exciting that we can now give a truly magnificent Swedish disaster film to the cinema audience. For the past six months, the special effects team has been working non-stop on the digital effects and without giving away too much, I can say that this film is going to be spectacular”, says Joakim Hansson, producer.

The Abyss is produced in collaboration with Film Tampere, Mjölk Movies, Business Finland, Seven Islands Production, Gran Canaria Film Commission and Spanish Tax Rebate in collaboration with The Spanish Government and U-media with the support from Belgian Tax Shelter.

The Abyss will premiere in Sweden on September 15, 2023.
