At the closing ceremony of the 21st edition of Bergman Week, it was announced that Jerry Carlsson is the recipient of the second annual Ingmar Bergman Script Award for his feature film script "Invasion". The award is a collaboration between SF Studios and the Bergman Center, and aims to encourage emerging filmmakers and screenwriters to write scripts for feature films with high artistic ambitions, aiming to reach a broad audience.
"For a science fiction-inspired drama that feels eerily contemporary in its depiction of a potential extraterrestrial threat — a threat that has tangible consequences for people, both on a societal and individual level. The script for Invasion explores themes related to the information society as well as how we receive people fleeing from danger. It is a tightly written and engaging story with a suggestively simmering tension, firmly grounded in an everyday realism — at times hyperrealistic — and with a cast of characters who, with a touch of humor, illuminate different responses to the approaching catastrophe," the jury's statement read.
Jerry Carlsson is a screenwriter and director with a background from Akademin Valand and the Alma Screenwriting Programme. He runs the production company Verket Produktion together with Anette Sidor and Frida Mårtensson. Jerry’s short films have been screened and awarded at festivals such as Venice, Toronto, Locarno, Tribeca, and Clermont-Ferrand, where Shadow Animals received both the Special Jury Award and the Canal+ Award. He has also won prizes at, among others, Palm Springs ShortFest and Nordisk Panorama. Jerry has been selected for Berlinale Talents and participated in European Film Promotion’s Future Frames. His feature film debut is currently in development, and he has directed two episodes of the Netflix drama Young Royals.
Invasion is a science fiction drama about an isolated small town in northern Sweden awaiting an alien invasion. Communication with the outside world is cut off, and when refugees from Stockholm arrive, the townspeople begin to suspect that the aliens may be hiding among them.
“It feels really exciting to receive the Ingmar Bergman Script Award! Especially in times like these, when it’s becoming increasingly difficult to finance and develop feature films, I feel that the award brings strength and inspiration to keep going. What resonates most with me in Bergman’s films is the suggestive, mysterious, and playfully visual. I’m grateful that the jury recognized both the artistic qualities and the potential to reach a wide audience,” says Jerry Carlsson
SF Studios and the Bergman Center have collaborated for many years to preserve the legacy of Ingmar Bergman. As part of this collaboration, The Ingmar Bergman Script Award was launched last year with Kaly Halkawt being the first recipient for her script Donia’s World. Fifty-seven scripts were submitted, and the jury's work has been ongoing since February.
The Ingmar Bergman Script Award will be presented annually during Bergman Week at the Bergman Center on Fårö, Gotland. The script must be an original story in feature film format in either Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or Finnish, with a clear ambition to reach a broad audience. The selected screenwriter will receive a financial grant of 50,000 SEK for their work and an opportunity to be coached by a recognized filmmaker/director/screenwriter.
Applications for next year's edition are now open with a deadline of February 20, 2026.
