SF Studios and Sveriges Television (SVT) in collaboration with Beta Film are producing the drama series Raoul about the internationally renowned Swedish diplomate Raoul Wallenberg, who became a hero saving thousands of Jews during World War II. The series of six episodes is written by Jesper Harrie, Måns Herngren and Carl-Johan Vallgren. Måns Herngren is the director. Raoul will start shooting in 2022.
Raoul was born into the powerful Swedish Wallenberg family, but was never included in the family's business empire. He was seen as a carefree and socially gifted man, and often joked about how cowardly he was. But when he faced the crossroad that would change his life forever, he chose the path that would require tremendous courage.
When Germany occupies Hungary in 1944 and the last large Jewish population is threatened by the Holocaust, Raoul is given a rescue mission to protect the Hungarian Jews. Raoul finds his way and is driven by a strong compassion, but also hope for a position in the Wallenberg Empire if he succeeds. During a few months Raoul saves the lives of tens of thousands of Jews with unconventional methods. But the price he must pay for his deeds is high. At the end of the war, Raoul Wallenberg is arrested by Soviet authorities and disappears.
"The story of Raoul shows what we can achieve when we follow our compassion and belief that all men are created equal. But Raoul, who refused to abandon his fellowmen, was himself abandoned by his country and by the Wallenberg family. This gives more dramatic dimensions to the story ", say Jesper Harrie, Måns Herngren and Carl-Johan Vallgren.
Raoul is written by the acclaimed scriptwriters Jesper Harrie and Måns Herngren and the August Prize-winning author Carl-Johan Vallgren. Together with SF Studios, they have acquired the rights to Ingrid Carlberg's August Prize-winning biography "Raoul Wallenberg. The Biography.” that the series is based on.
“It is with great joy and pride that we take on this project together with some of Sweden's greatest talents. SF Studios has an ambition to tell captivating stories that affect a wide audience. This story about Raoul Wallenberg is always important to be reminded of and must never be forgotten ", says Susann Billberg, Head of TV Drama at SF Studios.
"This is an incredibly strong story about humanity. But most of all, it is a story about how an individual, with great civil courage, could mean so much to the fate of so many people. What can be more relevant today than to tell just that?”, says Anna Croneman, Head of Drama at SVT.
Raoul is produced by SF Studios with producer Tobias Åström in co-production with SVT and the scripwriters and in collaboration with Beta Film. The film is developed with the support of the Creative Europe MEDIA programme of the European Union. Beta Film will handle international distribution.
